Executive Office

CEO

Lawrence graduated from Wits University in Physics and Mathematics, he then completed a Management Development Program at University of Stellenbosch and the BankSETA Executive Management Program in Canada. Lawrence has both attended and presented International Conferences on Credit related matters. He began his career as a Risk Analyst at Momentum Employee Benefits, before joining Nedbank in 2001 as an Interest Rate Derivatives and Long Dated FEC Trader/Quant. He started a Credit Derivatives Business at Nedbank Capital in 2003 (Johannesburg & London) and led the team until 2009, when he left to assume the role of CEO at Legae Securities. Lawrence is currently a member of the South African Institute of Financial Markets, and previously was the Chairman of Nedbank Capital Employment Equity Forum and a member of Nedbank Employment Equity Forum and Global Markets. Growing up he wanted to be an Electrical Engineer as he was interested in electronics and the mathematics behind them. His interest shifted to mainstream physics after working in the gold and diamond mines, he soon came to the realization that Electrical Engineers in South Africa end up being Maintenance Engineers.

Non-Exec Chairperson

Fatima has over 12 years experience in the design of financial products and services. She graduated with distinction from Wits University. She then went on to lecture applied mathematics in the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Wits University, before joining Standard Corporate & Merchant Bank as an interest rate derivatives trader. Fatima later worked for Peregrine Securities as a research/sales trader. In 2003, Fatima founded Legae Capital, which became one of SA's leading hedge fund multi-managers. Fatima is the founder of 27four Investment Managers, South Africa's first black owned and women-run institutional multi-manager. Fatima has received various awards, to name only a few: the ABSIP Financial Services Pioneer Award; the Financial Mail SA's top 20 black fund manager executives; the Top performing Fund of Hedge Fund award from Hedge Fund Intelligence and; the ABSIP Entrepreneur of the year Award, 2009.

Non-executive Director

Warren has worked at Peregrine Securities as a director since March 2001. Prior to that he was at ING Barings, Greenwich Securities and Prism Equities. Warren has more than 15 Years experience in the South African stock broking industry and has assisted in setting up two firms from inception and has been one of the pioneers of electronic trading in South Africa. Warren is a member of the JSE’s Trading Advisory Committee and the SA Institute of Stock Brokers.

Riad has a law degree, has worked as a consultant in various areas, spent time with SALGA and, since 2003, has been with the Department of Transport in the following roles: Chief Director: Western Corridors Chief Director: Aviation and Maritime Regulation Chief Director: Freight Strategy Acting Deputy Director General: Transport Logistics and Corridor Development

Institutional Equity Execution

Senior Institutional Equity Trader

Betzi has extensive experience in the financial and corporate investment sectors. She has demonstrated exceptional ability in Project Management, Equity Dealing, Analysis and Risk Management on both a local and international level and from the front office and back office capacity. She joined Standard Bank Financial Service in 2000 as a Custodian Service Consultant for the International Portfolios of clients and was a nominated member of the electronic “Black Book” Project for improving customer service. She was promoted to an On-line Share Trader in 2001, trading for private clients and online share trading clients on equities, warrants and single stock futures. In 2007 she joined UC Securities as an Institutional Equity Trader, trading on equities, pairs, baskets trading and algorithms and co-ordinated transitional trading projects, trading strategies and implementation of the transitional trading execution.

Institutional Equity Execution

Phinda started his career at Atlas Properties Management Services, as a trainee property manager. Thereafter he moved to BJM where he worked for 2 years as an Equity Trader. Phinda joined Legae in 2007, as a Private Client Equity Trader, and in 2008 moved to an Institutional Equity Execution role.  He graduated from the University of Western Cape with a B.Com Honours in Finance and has completed the Registered Securities Trader exams (SAIFM). Phinda is a real socialite; he has the “gift of the gab” and was a semi-finalist in the National Debating Championship in 2004.

Fixed Income

Bonds Trader

After completing a B Comm (Finance and Economics) and post graduate diploma in Finance, Banking and Investment Management at the University of Natal, Trevor began his career at Cadiz Specialised Asset Management in 2004. He worked in Investment risk and operations and assisted with the implementation of performance reporting and valuation models, investment administration and risk management for Protected Investment. Trevor then moved to Futuregrowth Asset Management as a Trader, before joining Legae Securities in August 2011 as a Bonds Trader. Trevor has a real passion for sport and is a dedicated Sharks and Orlando Pirate’s fan.

Private Clients

Head: Private and Corporate Clients

Derick began his career at Coopers Lybrand as an Audit Assistant Senior. He then moved to SA Housing Trust as a management analyst and thereafter was appointed as a corporate financial manager for Nu-Way Housing. Derick joined Legae in January 1998 as financial & compliance manager. Subsequent to Wipcapital purchasing 49% of Legae in 2000 Derick became group financial manager. Derick rejoined Legae in April 2004 as chief operating officer.  In July 2006 he was appointed as Head of Private Clients. Derick is a member of the Varsity Kudu's running team and has received numerous medals for participating in the comrades and various other races.

Private Client Portfolio Manager

Mik has obtained numerous qualifications throughout his career; B.Sc. Mining, B.Sc. Mineral Economics, B.Com Economics, B.Com Honours in Quantitative Management and a CFA. His career began as a planning officer for Winkelhaak Mines; he then held various roles within the mining sector; project engineer at Gencor, and a Superintendant for Technical Services at Ermelo Mines. He then moved into a research analyst role at Mathison Hollidge and then E.W Balderson. Mik joined Legae in 2000 as a Private Client Portfolio Manager; he then took up a role at Geo Capital for 3 years and rejoined Legae in 2009, as Private Client Portfolio Manager.

Private Client Trader

Marius has over 12 years experience within the stock broking industry. He started his career at ABSA Bank before moving to FNB as a settlement clerk. He then took up a position at Sasfin Frankel Pollak Stockbrokers as a credit controller, before moving into a Trader and Client Advisory role. Marius then joined Legae in 2007 as a Private Client Trader. Marius has completed the JSE Registered Trader Exam and has a diploma and advanced diploma in ministry. In 2010 he decided to take a short break from stock broking; however his passion for trading encouraged him to re-join Legae in 2011, as a Private Client Trader. He enjoys fishing, reading and keeping fit.

Research

Head: Research

Peter graduated with a MSc. Finance and Investments and a B.Com Honours in Finance. He has completed his level 2 CFA exams. Peter started his career at Renaissance Merchant Bank in Zimbabwe in 2002, as a dealer and an analyst. He then moved to Uganda to head up the stockbroking department at Renaissance Capital in 2005. Peter joined Legae in 2008, as an Equity Analyst covering research on Africa. He has recently been appointed as the Acting Head of Research. He finds joy in debates, travelling and his family. Peter’s belief is that “the height of life is reached through repeated self-transcendences.”

Economist

Waseem joined Legae in 2009 as a graduate trainee. During the first year at Legae, he spent time learning all areas of the business, and has recently been employed full time as an Economist. Waseem obtained a B.Com degree in Finance and Economics and thereafter completed his Honours in Economics and level 1 of a CFA. Waseem has a strong interest in politics and is an avid sports fanatic.  

Finance

Accountant

Faith completed her B. Com Honours in Accounting at the National University of Science & Technology in Zimbabwe. After completing her studies, she started her career at Econet Wireless Zimbabwe as a financial accountant. In 2007 Faith joined E-TV, where she worked as an accountant for three years, before joining Legae in September 2010. Faith enjoys de-stressing by exercising and watching movies, and particularly enjoys watching comedies.

Finance Administrator

Godfrey obtained a diploma in Financial Management and Computer Literacy at Professional FET College. He has also obtained a Cashier Certificate and is currently studying mathematical modeling through UNISA. Godfrey joined Legae in August 2010, where he assists in all areas of finance. He enjoys playing soccer and listening to music in his free time.

Settlement

Scrip Manager

With over 23 years of experience within back office, Agrippa started his career at BC Davies & Co as a script clerk. He then moved to Boner and Freemantle, within a supervisory role. In 1996 he joined forces with Legae management and was part of the first team of employees at Legae. Agrippa enjoys hiking, playing soccer and enjoys reading a good book.

Settlement Administrator

David joined Legae in 1998 as a settlement administrator. Prior to this he worked at Digital Systems as a storeman. David has completed a GLD COMPR Computer course and a Business Administration and Management course through Damelin. David enjoys playing soccer and is the dashing defender for the Crooks Soccer Team.

Settlement Administrator

Margaret began her career at Legae in 1997. She started in an office support role, making tea and doing errands. She then completed a Language Lab course, Microsoft course and a writing course. Margaret was then offered a mentorship position within the back office department and currently holds the title Back Office administration. Margaret enjoys reading and listening to music and is an excellent cook.

Compliance

Compliance Officer

Nazreen started her career at Shalmay Fakie Group as a Debtors and Creditors Clerk, thereafter she moved into a financial advisory role before steering her career in Debtors and Creditors Management, where she held numerous supervisory positions. Prior to joining Legae, Nazreen worked at Computershare gaining extensive experience first in Dividend reconciliations then Settlements and later as a Compliance Officer. She has completed the JSE Compliance Officer’s Exam and is currently completing her final year of B.Com Management through UNISA and the SAIFM Bond Compliance Exams. Nazreen has a great passion for life and has a positive attitude towards every opportunity. She enjoys spending time with her family and hiking, ziplinining, rock climbing and playing paintball.

Marketing

Marketing Manager

After completing her degree in Psychology at UCT and 3rd year level in Public Relations Management, Janice began her career in the film Industry in Cape Town. She then moved to London, where she held a number of positions in the advertising, television and media industries. Janice returned to South Africa and started working at Noah Financial Innovation in the marketing department in 2007. Janice joined Legae Securities in January 2010 as the Marketing Manager and is responsible for the entire marketing function, client communications and events. Janice has a real passion for life; she always has a bounce in her step and a smile on her face.  She enjoys being creative and keeps fit by playing hockey, tennis, touch-rugby and coaching mini-hockey.

IT

IT Administrator

Lewis started his career with R.T. Racing as a clerk. He then moved to Avax IT Services before joining Accenture and then RT Systems. Lewis joined Legae in 2007 where he worked for 2 years as an IT Technician. He then moved to Pumatech Software Solutions for a year, and thereafter rejoined Legae in 2010. Lewis has completed a Microsoft Certified Software Course as well various IT related courses. He has a real passion for computers and technology and enjoys playing play station in his free time.

Office Management

Personal Assistant

Prior to joining Legae Securities in 1997, Esther worked for more than 8 years in various departments at Truworths Ltd. This ranges from Credit Control, Creditors & Petty Cashier, and a Personnel Secretary. Esther has completed a Secretarial Diploma, an intermediate Book Keeping course, a Self Empowerment and Communication course, Microsoft office course and Project Management course. Esther is extremely efficient in her work and a wonderful mother. She enjoys travelling and baking delicious treats for her family.  

Office Support

Florence provides support to various departments at Legae. Previously she was employed by Wipcapital in reception and Neledzi Cleaning Services. Florence has completed an introductory computer and Microsoft course, an End User Technology course through Damelin and a Reception and Personal Assistant Programme. She loves to sing and read.
